The Conservative MP praised Mr Cameron and said his legacy will be for triggering the referendum which allowed Britain to quit the "appalling and corrupt" European Union.
Speaking on Sky News, Mr Rees-Mogg rejected claims Mr Cameron will be remembered for a "disastrous" referendum decision which saw 51.9% of the British public vote to leave the EU.
He said: "I completely reject that interpretation.
"He’ll be remembered as a hero who gave us a referendum that gave us back the freedom of our country in one of the most important decisions this nation has taken in generations.

"I think the liberation he has given the country, the ability for us to flourish outside the appalling and corrupt European Union will be a fantastic legacy for him, even if it wasn't what he was choosing at the time."
Despite going head-to-head with Mr Cameron's Remain campaign, the Brexiteer was very complimentary about other policy reforms made by the PM during his time in office.
He continued: "He'll also be remembered for welfare reforms, education reforms and getting the budget deficit under control.
"He’s been a really superb prime minister and I'm sorry I disagreed with him on the European issue."
The vehement eurosceptic had previously criticised Mr Cameron for his "deeply undignified" tactics during the referendum campaign.
Both the prime minister and George Osborne were seen as using 'Project Fear' to frighten people into voting to stay in the EU.
The MP for North East Somerset also bemoaned the constant verbal attacks on Boris Johnson during a key television debate.
