Kim Leadbeater speaks to Laura Kuenssberg about Trump and Jo Cox

The husband of murdered MP Jo Cox called for a "consensus against political violence in all forms" after the shooting at a rally for former US president Donald Trump in Pennsylvania.

And her sister Kim Leadbeater, who now represents Batley and Spen, Jo's former constituency for Labour, described the scenes from Pennsylvania as “shocking and disturbing.”

Brendan Cox, whose wife was killed by a far-right extremist in 2016, posted to X, questioning Mr Trump's own behaviour towards political opponents.

"Donald Trump has instigated, incited & inspired political violence against his opponents for years.

He added: "But that doesn't justify using violence against him. It undermines democracy & makes more violence more likely.

"We need a consensus against political violence in all forms."

Ms Leadbeater told Laura Kuennsberg, whose sister was murdered in 2016: “Shocking scenes, shocking and deeply disturbing.

“I woke up excited to talk about a Labour government and suddenly we see the scenes we saw this morning.

“We are back again having that conversation about what democracy looks like, what our politics looks like.”

Trump rushed off stage after gunshots at rally

Ms Cox was shot and stabbed to death by right-wing fanatics Thomas Mair on June while campaigning days before the Brexit referendum days later.

He was subsequently convicted of her murder and is currently serving a life-term in prison with a whole-life term, meaning he will never be released.

Mr Trump’s campaign said the presumptive Republican nominee was doing “fine” after being whisked off the stage though the shooting pierced the upper part of his right ear.

The Secret Service said it killed the suspected shooter who attacked from an elevated position outside the rally venue in Butler County, Pennsylvania.

US authorities are still investigating the shooting.
