Jeremy Corbyn has issued a stinging verdict on whether Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer will make a good Prime Minister.

Asked for his views after he was re-elected, Mr Corbyn said: "See what happens."

The former Labour leader continued: "He will become Prime Minister, he will have a majority in Parliament, he has put forward a manifesto that is thin to put it mildly and doesn't offer a serious economic alternative to what the Conservative government is doing. And so the demands on him are going to be huge, the demands from the people are going to be huge."

It comes after Mr Corbyn won his seat in Islington North as an independent candidate.

He won 24,120 votes - beating Labour candidate Praful Nargund who secured just 16,000 votes.

The former Labour leader has been an MP in the seat for more than 40 years but was blocked from standing as a Labour MP by the party's governing body after an antisemitism row.

He claimed the scale of antisemitism in the party had been "dramatically overstated".

Speaking after the result came in, Mr Corbyn said: "I want to place on record my enormous thanks to the people of Islington North for electing me for the 11th time."

In his victory speech, he claimed his campaign had shown "what kinder, gentler and more sensible, more inclusive politics, can bring about".

He said: "I couldn't be more proud of my constituency than I am tonight and proud of our team that brought this result. Thank you very much Islington North for the result we have achieved tonight."

He added: "I owe my life and my learning and my abilities entirely to the people of Islington North. This victory is dedicated entirely to them."
