Rishi Sunak arrives in Italy for G7 Summit

Rishi Sunak was given a warm welcome by Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as he arrived for the G7 summit.

The Prime Minister and his Italian counterpart put on a very friendly display at the gathering at the Borgo Egnazia resort in Puglia, Italy.

Mr Sunak and Ms Meloni were pictured embracing and holding hands as they greeted one another this morning.

The pair, who were elected within days of each other in October 2022, have appeared close in previous meetings.

They were touchy-feely when the PM attended an event organised by Ms Meloni's right-wing Brothers of Italy party in Rome last December.

And they were spotted sharing a laugh as Ms Meloni showed Mr Sunak her mobile phone at the Nato summit in July 2023.

It comes as Mr Sunak is taking a break from the campaign trail to attend the gathering with leaders of the world's seven richest nations.

They are the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States.

The summit is focusing on the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, as well as Africa and migration, economic security, and international cooperation on artificial intelligence (AI).

Mr Sunak will announce a £242 million package of assistance for war-torn Kyiv, aimed at meeting immediate humanitarian, energy and stabilisation needs in Ukraine and to lay the foundations for longer-term economic and social recovery, and reconstruction.
