October 26 - On this day: 39 years since the US snubbed Thatcher and invaded Grenada
The Daily Express recounts events of the past.
39 years ago (1983) We reported that the US snubbed Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s advice and led an invasion of Grenada following a communist coup. President Ronald Reagan ordered a combined force of US Marines and troops from six other neighbouring countries to invade the Caribbean island to secure its safety. Troops quickly seized control of the airport in the capital St George’s. The UN condemned the invasion as a violation of international law.
104 years ago (1918) The supreme commander of the Imperial German Army, Quartermaster-general Erich Ludendorff, was dismissed by Kaiser Wilhelm II for refusing to cooperate in peace negotiations with the Allies.
After the First World War, Ludendorff helped the Nazis rise to power.
66 years ago (1956) Fighting continued in Hungary between pro-democracy supporters and Soviet troops. The country’s new Prime Minister Imre Nagy promised free elections and withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact.
The move met with strong resistance from Moscow and Nagy was executed in 1958.
