October 20 - On this day: 33 years ago the Guildford Four were cleared of IRA bombings
33 years ago (1989) we said the Court of Appeal had cleared the Guildford Four after a new investigation declared their convictions were "unsafe".
Gerry Conlon, Paul Hill, Patrick Armstrong and Carole Richardson were found guilty of bombing two Guildford pubs on October 5, 1974 killing five. In 2005, Prime Minister Tony Blair apologised to the victims and their families for their wrongful imprisonment.

The House Un-American Activities Committee led by Senator Joseph McCarthy began its investigation into supporters of communism in Hollywood.
It resulted in a blacklist which wrongly prevented many actors and behind-the-scenes staff from working in the film industry.
49 years ago (1973)
Buddhist spiritualist leader the Dalai Lama arrived in Britain for the first time for a 10-day tour during in which he met the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Michael Ramsey.
He also travelled widely throughout Europe, including Italy, where he met Pope Paul V at the Vatican in Rome.
