But recently the Scottish National Party leader has been sporting a far more sleek look.
The 44-year-old Irvine-born politician appears to have looked to a famous royal for fashion inspiration.
Leaving her dodgy outfits in the past, Nicola appears to be channelling Kate Middleton's impeccable style - and is pulling it off with aplomb.
Nicola has ditched the boxy brightly coloured jackets and ill-fitting dresses
Baggy trouser suits have been vetoed in favour of sophisticated looks
Her sartorial choices now feature form-fitting dresses that cinch in at the waist and are cut just above the knee - similar to styles loved by the Duchess of Cambridge.
Nicola now also opts for elegant suede heels - Kate is famed for consistently wearing a near-identical black pair of Jimmy Choo shoes - to finish her smart but chic look.
Nicola's wardrobe transformed in 2007 when she was rumoured to have hired a personal shopper and employed a stylist in the run up to the Scottish parliament election.
Just like pregnant Kate, Nicola is a huge fan of bargain buys and turns to the British high street for most of her outfits.

She has been seen in items from French Connection, Dune and Scottish boutique Totty Rocks.
A recent hit with voters was a fuschia 1940's-style 'Blitz' dress from the Edinburgh-based independent outlet.
Nicola paired the £179 knee-length frock with raspberry hued stilettos.
The 44-year-old says shoes are her main vice
Nicola admits her "passion" is footwear and says her favourite store is Kurt Geiger.
“My passion for shoes and books make walking down the high street in Edinburgh difficult," she said.
“I am always buying shoes – not too expensive, though, because I am very hard on them.
"I blame it on the cobbles in Edinburgh.”

While looking on-point is important to the politician, comfort is also of upmost importance to her.
“It’s important in politics to look professional, but you’ve got to be comfortable, too," she said.
"I’m not naturally a smart-dressing type. I’m more at home in jeans."
