But Katy Perry who bagged this year's coveted slot - following in the giant diva footsteps of Beyonce, Madonna and Diana Ross - pulled it off with aplomb.
The 30-year-old set the University of Phoenix Stadium alive with a dose of cheeky Americana and excitement.
And, what's more, the Firework hit maker managed to squeeze in four outfit changes in a mere 13 minutes.
Katy enlisted the help of her friend and Moschino Creative Director Jeremy Scott to design her stellar stage wardrobe.
The Roar hit maker mounted a gold lion in her fiery leather get-up
The pop star opened her set with her number one smash hit Roar clad in a flame-emblazoned dress, while mounting a giant, moving lion.
Katy's fiery look was inspired by Jeremy's iconic Adidas sneaker designs.
Like the shoes the frock was patent leather with flames appliquéd over a shimmery gold base.
Jeremy said: "I wanted something strong, power and iconic for Katy's entrance."
Then she switched to a Fifties-inspired two-piece to perform Teenage Dream and California Girls.

While Missy belted out a mini-medley of her hits, including Get Ur Freak On, Work It and Lose Control, Katy danced around in a rhinestone-studded hoodie.
The blinged-out football jersey coordinated nicely with her backing dancers and the rap star.
