The fashion rules for every decade
DESIGNER John Rocha gives tips on staying stylish no matter what your age.
In your 30s
This is the time to build a wardrobe of fabulous staples.
Invest in timeless pieces, especially a little black dress.
This will work for you no matter what age you are and is something you buy in your 30s that could last for years.
Also, invest now in an amazing cashmere cardigan and a crisp white shirt.
Your 30s is the time to embrace bold, zingy colour patterns and to follow trends while taking time to get used to what really suits you.
In your 40s
As spring approaches dig out your summer dresses but be honest about size. As you age sometimes wearing a bigger size is better.
Many women in their 40s make the mistake of wearing clothes that are too tight. Skimpy dresses and tight trousers can make you look older so get the best fit you can find.
This is the age where women can get stuck in a rut but nowadays fashion is so accessible there’s no need. Check out magazines and newspapers for styles you like.
Don’t let your fashion choices get boring but when you do experiment make sure you take time to work out if the item you like really suits you.
In your 50s
At this age you should reassess the colours that suit you.
The vibrant reds you could wear in your 30s and 40s might now start to drain you.
As you get older, your skin tone will change and that means the colours that suit you best change too. Take a trip to a department store and ask for advice or simply hold colours close to your face in the mirror as this should give you a good idea of what works.
Don’t get hung up on following fashion. Just because something is trendy doesn’t mean it will suit you.
Instead, focus on your shape.
If you are slightly rounder stay away from blocks of bright colours and be careful about stripes too.
In your 60s and beyond
Embrace the sophistication and confidence age brings.
By now you will know what suits you so stick to those styles. Everyone ages differently so rules are not set in stone.
A good pair of tights hides a multitude of sins. You can still experiment with skirt length, after all if you have great legs why shouldn’t you get them out?
Tops and dresses with a sleeve should now become standard.
If your top has short sleeves wear a cashmere stole or a beautiful pashmina. Wear what makes you feel comfortable mentally and physically. If something makes you feel and look fabulous, buy it.
