I cleaned my kitchen drain that’s been blocked for 7 months with 1 Home Bargains item
I never expected something costing 89p from Home Bargains to be able to clear my kitchen sink, which has been blocked for over seven months.

Blocked drains are a nightmare, no matter if they’re affecting your shower, bathroom sink or kitchen sink. However, when it affects your kitchen sink, it can be worse, as it can lead to smells developing – definitely not something you want when preparing food. My kitchen sink had been slow-draining for at least seven months, but it was only recently that I noticed a foul stench coming from the drain.
To tackle it, I opted for two natural approaches first. I started with the classic white vinegar and baking soda method, but it was ineffective. The second cleaning method I tried was using soda crystals, as I had previously had success with them when unblocking my shower drain; however, it didn’t seem to work either. This then led me to try two specialised chemical products, but only one of them I picked up from Home Bargains worked.

Since it’s in the kitchen, I try to avoid using harsh cleaning chemicals whenever possible, as the odours can be overwhelming.
However, since neither of the two popular natural cleaning methods worked, the next step was to use chemicals.
Before testing them out, I made sure to open the window and door in case any of the cleaning solutions had strong fumes.
Going down the chemical route, I put the £4 Buster Kitchen Drain Unblocker to the test, but the sink was still slow to drain, and the scent still lingered.
I also picked up an off-brand sink and drain unblocker from Home Bargains, but at only 89p, I didn’t have high hopes.

With some rubber gloves on, as instructed on the bottle, I started by removing some of the excess water from the drain, then poured half of the bottle down the drain, leaving it to sit for an hour.
I then flushed the drain out with hot, not boiling, water. I turned the tap on, and the sink wasn’t as slow-draining, but it still wasn’t as fast as usual.
I decided to pour the rest of the solution down, and this time I left it to sit for two hours before flushing.
Coming back to the drain later, I noticed the smell had gone, and when I ran the tap this time, the water went down like normal.
To avoid my kitchen drain blocking badly again, I’ll be heading to Home Bargains to stock up on this sink and drain gel.
