Dust is a common problem in homes, as it seems to reappear as soon as it is removed. It can settle along skirting boards, on TVs, furniture and walls.

There are a number of ways to tackle dust from using a feather duster to a polish and cloth. I tend to reach for a spray bottle of polish and a yellow cloth, but recently discovered a cheap item from B&M can do the job even better. The cleaning hack has left my home dust-free as well as providing a fresh scent.

All I use are tumble dryer sheets. While they are intended for use during laundry to soften fabrics and reduce static, the sheets can surprisingly work as a duster.

The texture of the sheets can lift dust off surfaces rather than pushing it around, as I find happens with a cloth. Plus, the anti-static design even helps stop dust from returning after cleaning.

I picked up a pack of Fabulosa Tumble Dryer Sheets for just £1. The box includes 40 sheets and comes in several scents.

I selected the fresh linen box as I thought it would be ideal for freshening up my home. To use the sheets, I simply took one out of the box and wiped along my skirting boards.

I was met with a very pleasant smell that spread across the room, not just the area I wiped down. I was amazed at how quickly the dust lifted off the surface with so little effort on my part.

I decided to use the sheet on my chest of drawers too, and was again surprised by the results from such an unexpected item. Tumble dryer sheets are certainly overlooked when it comes to dusting, but have become a staple in my cleaning cupboard.

Plus, they can also be placed in drawers to keep clothes smelling fresh. Others have even suggested the sheets can remove deodorant stains and tame static hair.

I found the sheet made my hands feel slightly sticky when using it, so make sure you wash them afterwards.

How to use tumble dryer sheets for dusting

Simply buy a box of tumble dryer sheets from supermarkets or homeware stores. They are typically under £2.

Once home, open the box and take out a sheet. Use the sheet like you would use a cloth and wipe down dusty areas.

You do not need any polish or any other product. Keep using the sheet until it has dried out or it is too covered in dust. I managed to clean my skirting boards and chest of drawers, and it still hadn't dried out.

Once done, dispose of it in the correct bin. Your skirting boards and furniture should now stay cleaner for longer thanks to the sheets' anti-static properties.

Repeat when you need to dust again.
