Cleaning hard floors is one of those household jobs that can feel satisfying, but is often time-consuming and repetitive. This is especially true when using traditional mops and buckets. Over the years, I’ve tried a range of floor cleaning methods and devices, such as the Tineco Floor One S5 Smart Cordless Wet-Dry Vacuum Cleaner and Mop, as well as the simple Flash Speedmop, which also works great on bathroom tiles and kitchen cabinets.

But the Philips OneUp 5000 has noticeably changed my cleaning experience. It’s essentially a cordless electric hard-floor mop that sprays clean water and cleaning solution onto the floor, scrubs it, and then sucks dirty water back into a separate tank. My floors are cleaner than ever, and it takes me less than 10 minutes to clean the downstairs of my home.

It’s designed for hygienic hard floor cleaning, and it requires little to no strength to use, compared to traditional mopping.

One of its main strengths, I’ve found, is how simple it is to set up and operate, with no complicated settings. It has two settings: one for everyday cleaning and one for a deeper clean that uses more water.

It also doesn’t require frequent charging, which makes it convenient for regular use around the home. I think I used it around 10 times before it needed charging, and even then, it charged fast.

In terms of performance, it works great and feels more hygienic and efficient than traditional mopping methods, and it's less wasteful than the Flash Speedmop. The pads are reusable and machine-washable, so there’s no waste.

My wood flooring dries so quickly after using this tool, so I don’t have to avoid walking on it for hours while it dries.

The dirty water tank is simple to empty and clean, so you never have to touch the dirty water. It’s also super satisfying to see the dirty water, even when you think your floors are clean.

I think the tool is revolutionary, and I’ve never tried anything like it. But that doesn’t mean I think it’s perfect.

One drawback I’ve found is that the device is quite heavy to push, which can make cleaning under furniture tricky. However, once you get into the rhythm, it glides along hard floors.

Additionally, the water tank is relatively small, so it may need to be refilled more than once when cleaning larger areas, especially on the more abrasive cleaning setting.

Reviews of the floor mop agreed with me, with one reading: “This feels quite heavy at first, but once you get cleaning the floor, it moves quite easily. The clean water container doesn't hold much water. I managed to clean a relatively long corridor, and then it ran out of water.”

Another said: “The only downside is that it is relatively heavy pushing around and going underneath cupboards.”

You also need to use the Philips OneUp Floor Cleaning Solution for the tool to work; it's around £17 for two bottles. I don’t love appliances and tools that don’t let you use other cleaning solutions, but the cleaning solution is used up so slowly that it’ll be ages before I have to replace it.

However, users also praised its battery life and ease of use. One reviewer wrote: “It’s really simple to use, I particularly like the amount of battery life in it and the fact it has a simple collector for the dirty water and clean water tank, both easily removable and easy to wash, etc. Philips is a premium brand, and this item is well worth the money.”

A second said: “I find this mop cleans my hard floors much more effectively, and also the floors dry very quickly. The mop is lightweight and easy to manoeuvre, and it gets into hard-to-reach places. It's sturdy and comes with an easy-to-empty water tank."

It is priced at £150, which places it way above basic mop systems. However, based on ease of use and convenience, it still represents good value in my eyes for those wanting effortless cleaning.

There aren’t many tools on the market like this, with the majority being steam mops.

One similar one I’ve tried is the Tineco Floor One S5 Smart Cordless Wet-Dry Vacuum Cleaner and Mop, which vacuums and mops the floor simultaneously. It was great and easy to use, but it’s quite large, which isn’t ideal for smaller kitchens or utility areas.

Kärcher EWM 2 Electric Wipe Mop works similarly to the Philips OneUp 5000, with one tank for clean water and solution, and another for dirty water. However, it does only have a 20-minute battery life, so it's great for small spaces. It's £139 if purchased directly, and £139.99 from Argos.

One review of the floor mop said: "Good cleaner. Very easy to use, smooth and light. I find it very difficult to remove the water filler, and I also struggle to put the rollers on. Not good for arthritic or weak hands, otherwise very good."

Another wrote: "Got this a few weeks ago, lifesaver has been a lifesaver with having a new pup who loves to leave my floors messy. The mop is always ready to use, and floors are clean in seconds, no need to fill mop buckets, etc."
