It's hardly the most enjoyable of tasks and can be frustrating when you are faced with a stubborn build-up of hard water marks and toilet stains. However, cleaning enthusiasts have discovered a swift and simple method to tackle the chore without needing to buy anything new.

Chances are you already have the ideal product sitting somewhere at the bottom of your bathroom cupboard that will effortlessly scrub through stains. Unpleasant colours can build up on your toilet bowl over time, and hard water marks are natural as bathroom water leaves its magnesium and calcium deposits on smooth surfaces. But as Reddit cleaners have discovered, there’s one unexpected item that cuts through all of this, and you probably already have it. A Reddit user sharing tips on banishing the stubborn stain said that the secret lies in your foot care stash.

Describing the process as “satisfying”, they said: “I live in a place with very hard water and even with a water softener I have to scrub with a pumice stone every few months. I thought it would scratch the porcelain but it hasn’t.”

The pumice is gently abrasive, harder than the mineral deposit but softer than the porcelain, breaking down stains without scratching the surface of your toilet or other surfaces.

Another Reddit user said: "I love those things, I had a really gross before and after when I did it to one of our toilets and it’s amazing what those stones are capable of. When I first moved in with my husband a few years back, one of the toilets was atrocious. But now it’s like yours. I love getting tough hard water off of my shower faucets and sinks as well!"

Pumice stones are readily available in supermarkets, frequently for under £1. Asda's comes in at just 94p. One Reddit user gave their ultimate toilet cleaning routine: “I emptied the bowl. Splashed Zep Toilet Bowl Cleaner, waited five minutes, scoured the ring with a Pumice Scouring Stick, and used a scrub daddy for the poop barnacles. Microfiber towels for the outside.”

One person asked if there was any need to empty the bowl. The Reddit user responded: “You could probably do it with the water in the bowl but it is easy to dump a bucket of water in the bowl to empty it. (I just use my trashcan in the bathroom).

"Something about the sudden pressure or excess water being dumped just flushed the toilet without it refilling. Simply flush to refill later.”
