Jumpers are among the hardest workers in any winter wardrobe, but without proper care, they can start looking bobbly quickly. My secret weapon for keeping knitwear looking like new all year round? A fabric shaver. These clever gadgets remove the likes of pills, fuzz and lint in seconds, and I've spotted the exact model I use is now less than £10 at Amazon.

The Philips fabric shaver, which is already a bargain at £15.99, has been reduced to £9.99 on Amazon at the time of writing.

It works similarly to a razor you might use on your face or body, but it's specifically designed to gently remove bobbles from fabrics without damage. Its round shaving head has three hole sizes to tackle pills of all sizes, and its blade height can be adjusted for different materials.

I use mine all the time in winter, and then give my jumpers a freshen up before they go into storage for the summer. This yearly ritual has kept everything from fluffy jumpers to wool coats in great shape. While I've only used it on clothes, some reviewers say it works on soft furnishings like blankets and even on a sofa.

The brand claims it can work on any type of fabric, even delicates, without damaging the material, thanks to a detachable fabric protector. I have used this on everything from hard-wearing cotton hoodies to more delicate fibres like wool and cashmere, and can confirm it's super-easy to use – and effective.

I find that my jumpers tend to pill in the underarm area, especially when I'm wearing coats, but a quick pass with the shaver keeps them looking like new.

This model is small and lightweight, and can be manoeuvred without tiring out hands. It is quite small, so it does take a while to go over a larger jumper. It's also cordless and runs on two AA batteries, which are included in the pack. Once you're done, it's simple to empty, and comes with a cleaning brush.

Amazon shoppers are as impressed with the shaver as I am, with one writing: "I love this little device - it has removed all the bobbles off my clothes...It is small but mighty and looks good too. Definitely breathed new life into my coats and jumpers!"

A second reviewer wrote: "This has revived so many of my sweaters, jumpers, joggers and trousers! The battery life is great and it’s a sleek design. It’s very portable and easy to use."

Another said: "I used to spend so long and made such a mess using razors to shave the bobbles off jumpers. Using this makes it a quick and easy job." As for using it on home furnishings, one reviewer wrote that it made their bobbly sofa "like new again".

For some, the small size is a downside, as it may require more frequent emptying than some models, but I don't think it's a deal-breaker given the price. It is worth bearing in mind that it's battery-operated, meaning it's not quite as environmentally friendly as a rechargeable model.
