The end of summer is fast approaching, and that unfortunately means only one thing - spiders. UK households are more likely to spot the eight-legged creatures during this time of year, which is not good news if you're not a fan.

The last thing you want is for spiders or dust mites to find their way into your bed, which could result in a pretty unpleasant surprise when you throw back the covers. Dust mites can cause symptoms such as skin rashes or other allergy-like reactions, but being microscopic, it's hard to know how to get rid of them. Thankfully, one cleaning expert has shared an easy trick for banishing both of these pests using just two ingredients.

Lifestyle influencer Chantel Mila on TikTok, who boasts more than 1.6 million followers, says you can easily repel spiders and dust mites from your room - and your bed - by making a simple spray with just two ingredients.

In a recent video, she explained: "This mix is my go-to to leave your room bug-free and smelling amazing."

Even better, it only requires two household staples that you've probably already got in your cupboards - white vinegar and essential oil.

How to keep spiders and dust mites out of your bed

First, you'll need to grab a spray bottle and fill it with one cup of water. Then, add half a cup of white vinegar, and a few drops of either lavender or peppermint essential oil.

Whether you use it to go to sleep or have used it to repel other pests in the past, these oils are really handy to have around the house.

Give it a shake to combine, and then spray over your bed or any other areas you're worried about catching spiders. Chantel said: "This powerful mix can be used on your mattress, bedhead and bedsides to repel spiders and dust."

Spiders are said to dislike the strong acidic smell of white vinegar, but if you dilute it in water, you can still spray it around your bed without leaving a bad aroma behind.

The essential oils work in a similar way, with many other pests - such as rats, mice and flies - also detesting the smell of peppermint.

As well as these two items, spiders are also apparently not a fan of cinnamon. By scattering this fragrant spice along windowsills and doorways, it creates a barrier for spiders, meaning they are less likely to enter your home for warmth and the opportunity to find a mate.
