Sinks often become clogged or take ages to drain due to the everyday food, grime and grease, but are incredibly easy to unblock with just one item.

Nancy Birtwhistle, an expert best known for winning the Great British Bakeoff and her bestselling cleaning book, has shared that you do not need unblockers with harsh chemicals to clear blockages.

In a Facebook post, Nancy said: “Now before you go out and buy sink unblockers, with many of them being so toxic to the environment, try this!”

“All I used was 200g of washing soda and dissolved it in 200ml of boiling water from the kettle.”

Washing soda, also known as soda crystals, are natural mineral salt that is soluble in water and is very effective at breaking down grease, food, soap or anything else that is likely blocking a drain.

It is often a popular suggestion online to use vinegar and baking soda to clear a drain, but while these natural cleaners are good at removing stains, they cannot break down acidic grease or fat.

Meanwhile, soda crystals are alkaline and have natural detergent properties, which means they can naturally break down grease and dissolve any other organic matter that often blocks drains.

All you have to do is boil the kettle, clear the sink of any standing water, add soda crystals and then pour the water directly from the kettle directly into the plug.

Nancy said: “Pour [boiling water] down the plug-hole sink and then sprinkle over another couple of tablespoons of washing soda, put the plug and leave it for several hours, even better overnight.

“Then the next day, remove the plug and pour down a kettle of boiling water, and the sink will be free-flowing nice and fast again.”

Nancy then showed her sink several hours after using the soda crystal solution and the water was able to drain away incredibly quickly.

She added: "Rather than reaching for the toxic, chemical-heavy and often expensive sink blockers, try this cheaper, eco-friendly and natural alternative."

In Nancy’s comment section, many people were amazed at the simple cleaning solution and said it had worked for them.

One user said: “I did this yesterday, works a treat.”

Another person commented: “I do this to my daughter's sink once a week!” while someone else wrote: “This is brilliant, worked well and stopped the drain from smelling.”

Dri Pak Soda Crystals can be bought for £2 at Tesco and Asda, £2.35 at Morrisons and £2.50 at B&Q.
