Deodorise and freshen trainers
If you’ve been heading out for walks, use your trainers for exercise or have just had them a long time - they can pick up a rather pungent odour.
While you can buy specialist shoe deodorisers, you can also save money and create your own at home.
Simply grab your baking soda and sprinkle it inside your smelly trainers.

Then, leave it to sit overnight and either shake or hoover out the excess the next day.
Baking soda has odour absorbing properties, so will get rid of the sweaty smells.
If you want another scent, you can mix in some essential oils to the baking soda before sprinkling.
You can choose scents like lavender, peppermint or orange for some nice-smelling shoes.
Shift baked on grime in your oven
Sprinkle baking soda over the bottom surface of your oven, and then spray the surface (and baking soda) with water.
Allow the wet baking soda to sit for a few hours, and then use a textured sponge to scrub away the build-up.
Wipe the surface with a wet cloth, until the surface is clean.

Deodorise wooden chopping boards
Wooden cutting boards are found in nearly every kitchen but can hold on to lingering smells.
Chopping onion and garlic can create residual odours which cling to wooden cutting boards.
One solution is to sprinkle baking soda over the surface of a wooden cutting board.
Then scrub the baking soda into the wood, and rinse with fresh water.
For a fresh scent, you can use lemon essential oils mixed in with the baking soda before scrubbing.
Freshen your bin
Our bins can often go neglected, and over time can start to smell of leftover food.
Again, you can buy purpose-made bin deodorisers, however, using baking soda is a cheaper alternative.
Every time you replace your bin bags before you add the bag sprinkle a dusting of baking soda into the bottom of the bin.
This should be repeated every few weeks, but make sure to wash your bin regularly and get rid of any old baking soda before refreshing.
Clean your mattress
While we often change our sheets, our mattresses can go unwashed for months at a time.
You shouldn’t scrub your mattress with soap and water if you can help it, however if you have a smelly or stained mattress you can use baking soda.
Simply sprinkle a fine layer of baking soda over your bare mattress and leave to sit for around 30 minutes.
Then hoover off the baking soda, and you should leave behind a refreshed mattress.
Remove crayon from walls
Should your little terrors take a crayon and create a masterpiece on the walls - there’s an easy way to shift it.
Simply wet a cloth, then sprinkle generously with baking soda.
Gently wipe your wall with the baking soda-soaked cloth until the marks are removed.
