The average commuter will leave £101-worth of valuables on trains over the Christmas period
The study reveals 63 per cent have lost personal items and Christmas shopping at this time of year having drunk too much alcohol.
Indeed, one in five commuters (20 per cent) admit they have lost bags of shopping in the run up to Christmas.
Of the 2,000 people quizzed by specialist insurance broker Towergate, 31 per cent said thinking about work was to blame for leaving possessions and newly bought gifts on trains.
And one in ten (8 per cent) said stowing shopping bags underneath train seats meant they were more easily forgotten.
The research found men are likely to lose more valuable personal items than women.
Men are more likely to lose mobile phones (10 per cent) or wallets (8 per cent) at the office party.

Commuters are often carrying valuable and newly-bought gifts
Despite our forgetful nature, 52 per cent of Britons admit not having insurance for their personal items or not being sure if they are covered.
A further 13 per cent are unsure if their work items like mobile phones and laptops were covered by insurance.
Mobiles and laptops are just some of the expensive items left on trains
Drew Wotherspoon, of Towergate, said: “At this time of year commuters are often carrying valuable and newly-bought gifts on their way to and from work.
“Despite the effort it takes to buy and pick these carefully chosen items, they can easily be forgotten during the Christmas celebrations.
“Without adequate insurance, the cost of losing these items or any personal belongings can put a serious dent in your Christmas spirit which is why it's important to understand what your personal policies cover outside of the home which is where we can help.”
