A positive outlook can reduce stress
HAVING a positive outlook on life can drastically reduce stress levels, scientists revealed yesterday.
Optimists find it easier to regulate the production of cortisol, the stress hormone, by their adrenal gland, according to researchers at Concordia University in Montreal.
In a six-year study, 135 adults, who identified themselves as optimists or pessimists, had their hormone levels measured five times a day.
Researcher Joelle Jobin said: “On days [of] higher than average stress, the pessimists’ stress response is much elevated, and they have trouble bringing their cortisol levels back down. Optimists were protected in these circumstances.”
