Gardening tips: Four homemade hacks to kill garden weeds

Like it or not, when it comes to garden care, weeds are somewhat of a persistent enemy, mainly thanks to their hardy nature and the sly way in which their seeds spread and take root. However, weeds themselves do not grow from beneath your patio slabs. Instead, the seeds are usually carried by the wind until they come to rest within the cracks and gaps between your patio pavers.

Typically dark and moist with rich soil, these spaces create the perfect environment for seeds to germinate and take root before they eventually poke out from your patio’s gaps. Tackling the weeds fast when they are still young is the best course of action, but pulling them by hand can be tiresome. While chemical weed killers are another option, they are not always effective and consist of toxic ingredients.

Instead, many gardeners opt to use natural methods, and one woman has found success with one particular ingredient - salt.

Taking to the Mrs Hinch Gardening Tips Facebook page, Beverly Cooper wrote: “Omg I have just sprayed my weeds on patio with a salt solution and it’s killed them within an hour. It’s been a month and they still haven’t come back.”

Other group members were also fans of this natural hack. Jackie Hinge said: “I did this last year, wanting to avoid chemicals, and it worked a treat.”

Mary Whelan commented: “I used rock salt on the weeds that were popping up through my monoblock, and it did the trick. They’ve not returned.

Michelle Turner pointed out: “I use cheap table salt and it works.” Catherine McInnes wrote: “I can totally agree, tried this and worked within hours. Amazing.”

Katrina Saunders explained: “I got rid of my weeds last year with salt, now I just use it every so often to prevent them from coming back.”

Both table salt and rock salt will work well to get rid of patio weeds. Express.co.uk recently tested out natural methods to get rid of weeds and found that rock salt was one of the best options.

When absorbed by the plant, salt will disrupt the plant’s growth cycle and will make the weed wilt and later die.

Given how powerful salt is on weeds, it’s vital not to use this method near plants you don’t want to see die.

You can either apply salt straight to the weeds and pour on boiling water, or use a three-to-one ratio of salt to water and spray the solution onto the weeds.
