Grass will be thicker and greener if you do Alan Titchmarsh's 'easiest' step in June
There is a simple way to improve the look of your lawn this summer.

Grass are an essential yet often neglected part of many British gardens. It can develop patches, become overrun with moss and weeds, or lose its vibrant green hue.
Gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh reveals there's a straightforward solution for revitalising your lawn now summer has arrived. He describes it as the "easiest way" to maintain lawns and give them some vital care. Alan advises using a rake to clear moss from lawns, creating room for healthy growth.
He explains that grass has a "great" ability to bounce back, regardless of how tired it appears.
Gardeners can help lawns in recovering from damage during this time of year by removing the moss. Moss tends to spread more quickly than grass during spring and summer, so clearing it enables the grass room to flourish.
Alan said: "The simplest way to get that moss and any dead grass, or thatch as we call it, is to use a wire toothed rake. Pulling and pulling and pulling, you'll be amazed at what comes out."
Using a wire-toothed rake will remove the moss from the lawn without disturbing the grass. This allows the grass chance to expand into the spaces previously occupied by moss and develop a lush lawn.
In his Gardening with Alan Titchmarsh TikTok clip, the caption reads: "It may be hard work, but removing this build-up creates space for the grass to spread, strengthen, and produce a healthier, greener lawn for the months ahead."
Lawn care isn't always the main concern for many gardeners, making it understandable how issues appear.
Alan explained: "It's easy to forget that grass is a plant, and it's a plant that we treat more cruelly than anything else growing in the garden.
"We prune it once a week in spring and summer, which we don't do to anything else. We trample all over it with our feet, we play games on it.
"In winter, when it's cold and wet, we stop mowing it but we walk all over it and turn it to mud. Is it any wonder that lawns can sometimes look a bit of a mess?"
For those who would rather not manually drag a rake through moss and dead grass, a powered scarifier offers a more convenient alternative, removing moss and dead grass automatically.
The device works much like a lawn mower, being guided back and forth across the garden. Moss, dead grass and weeds are collected within the machine, which can then be emptied into a garden waste bin or compost heap.
