Lawns will be ‘greener, stronger and vibrant’ if 1 natural item is added to the soil now

One of the most important gardening jobs in autumn is to make sure grass does not become brittle or disease-ridden once the weather gets colder and there's a simple way to do so.

Lawn care is important to take seriously as the UK heads further into October as it’s the last month gardeners can make a real difference.

October can be a mixed bag weather-wise, but with average highs of 16 degrees and lows of around seven degrees, it’s a period of recovery for your grass.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, lawn specialist and founder of Buy Lawn Turf has shared what lawn care jobs need focusing on around this time of year.

He said: “Typically, in October and November your focus is going to switch to preparing your grass for winter and the colder months.

“You should consider your mowing routine, any treatments and how you can prevent lawn diseases taking hold of your grass.”

Autumn season, lawn mowing in the garden.

Daniel noted that mowing in these months is going to depend on the weather and how your lawn responds.

Generally, if the grass keeps growing and gets to the point where it needs to be trimmed, you can mow your lawn, but be sure to adjust your mower height settings so that it is set to around four to 6cm.

This is because the amount of sunlight in these months is significantly reduced, so keeping it that little bit longer “gives it the best chance”.

In terms of treatments and feeding your lawn, the expert claimed that gardeners will need to use a fertiliser that is designed for winter and frost especially.

He said: “You’ll want to make sure it includes ingredients that are designed to strengthen the grass - a seaweed-based treatment can be perfect to help unlock soil nutrients.

“This will also help keep your lawn growing greener, stronger and vibrant as well as control any moss that may build up.”

There are so many seaweed-based fertilisers on the market like the Miracle-Grow Nourish and Protect Seaweed Lawn Food that retails for £12.15 currently on Amazon and has been given a four to five-star rating.

Alternatively, gardeners can opt for Westland’s Universal Seaweed Granules from B&Q FOR £9.95 which can be used on lawns up until the end of October.

Aside from feeding their lawns, gardeners need to avoid fungus diseases which are very common in October and November.

The most popular is fusarium patch disease. To give your lawn a chance against this you should try to maintain as much airflow as possible. Gardeners can do this by scarifying and aerating.
