Battling weeds between patio cracks can be a constant headache, but a savvy mum-of-three has revealed an affordable and effective solution.

Jessica Nakamura, shared her trick on TikTok, @thatmamarealtor, using a simple but powerful hack using a common kitchen staple.

"If you need a simple way to get rid of the weeds between your interlock, try using baking soda," Jessica said.

She explained her method, which costs as little as 59p from supermarkets like Sainsbury’s, and has since earned widespread praise.

“I got this fifty-pound bag from a farm supply store for just $30. Sweep it all into the cracks and wet it with a garden hose.

"After 24 hours, your weeds will look dry and brown and come out so easily. And they won’t grow back.”

Jessica's baking soda trick works because of its salt content, which dehydrates weeds, drying them out to the root and stopping them from absorbing water.

Gardening experts from The Spruce confirmed its effectiveness, stating: "If you want to kill a weed permanently, this is one way to do it: dry it out so much that it can’t take up water anymore."

While Jessica’s bulk purchase might seem hefty, UK shoppers can grab smaller tubs of baking soda for just 59p at Sainsbury’s, or 65p at Lidl.

Importantly, it’s a pet-friendly method. PetMD advises that baking soda is safe for pets and kids, as long as it’s not consumed in large quantities.

For those looking for an alternative, experts suggest using salt as a another low-cost solution.

Harry Bodell from PriceYourJob explained that salt can dehydrate weeds similarly to baking soda.

"Salt interferes with the weed’s ability to absorb essential nutrients like potassium and calcium, causing it to dry out from dehydration and die."

For best results, Bodell recommends applying salt or baking soda on a dry day to prevent rain from washing away the solution.
