The UK's best butter has been crowned - and it costs a fraction of the price of fan favourite Lurpak.

Good butter is essential for a morning slice of toast and result's from a consumer survey see the best in the market belonging to affordable supermarket Aldi.

The study by consumer watchdog Which? put three supermarket own-brand options ahead of Lurpak in terms of both price and taste.

A blind taste test asked 67 people to rate eight supermarket spreadables, with options from Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, M&S, Ocado, tesco and Waitrose, as well as the popular Danish brand, Lurpak.

Coming top of the list was Aldi's own 'Nordpak', rated highly for it's creaminess, colour and well-rounded flavour.

Although it may have a similar name to the branded option, the price point differs, with it coming in at £2.18.

The 500g tub was one of the cheapest options, getting a Which? Great Value endorsement as well as a Best Buy award.

Coming in at second was M&S lightly salted butter blend, which was also given a Best Buy title.

The Marks and Spencer spread scored highly for flavour and texture and contained the highest proportion of butter of the spreads included in the test.

Although this option remained cheaper than Lurpak at £2.30 for 250g, it is significantly more expensive than Aldi's option.

The next supermaket option that gained a higher score than Lurpak, was Morrisons Salted Spreadable.

The spread was rated among the best for texture and comes in at £2.18 for 450g.

Lurpark took fourth place, scoring well for appearance, flavour and texture.

But, it had the highest price point, costing £5 at Waitrose.

However, the brand is currently on offer at Asda, costing £3.75 for 400g or two packs for £5.

Lurpak is also discounted at Tesco where you can grab a pack for £3 with a Clubcard.

The options from Ocado, Lidl and Asda also got good scores, with Tesco and Waitrose spreads coming in at the bottom of the pack.

Natalie Hitchins, Which? head of home products and services said: "A spreadable butter that can be used straight out of the fridge and without making a mess of your bread can save time and stress.

"We’ve churned through offerings from the main supermarkets and found Aldi’s Nordpak is not only the tastiest tub on test, but also less than half the price of its branded counterpart."
