I tried bourbon biscuits from 7 supermarkets – cheap pack beats Waitrose and M&S
Bourbon biscuits are a favourite for British shoppers, but which supermarket has the best ones? These are my thoughts after a comprehensive taste test.

I tried bourbon biscuits from seven of the UK's major supermarkets to decide which one has the best, and I was pleasantly surprised by the results. Bourbon biscuits are a British classic, and they regularly make their way into the shopping trolleys and kitchen cupboards of many UK households. Most supermarkets have their own-label versions of the popular biscuit, and I compared seven of them and scored them based on the creamy filling, the biscuit, the combined texture and the overall flavour.
I scored them out of 25, giving a certain number of points for the above-mentioned criteria. The biscuit, filling and texture were all worth five points each, while the overall flavour was scored out of 10. These were then added up to come up with a final score, and the various bourbon biscuits were ranked from best to worst accordingly. While personal tastes and preferences always come into play, I tried to be as objective as possible.
Here are the supermarket bourbon biscuits ranked from worst to best.

7. Lidl Tower Gate Bourbon Creams
Price: 85p (400g)
There was quite a rich cocoa flavour from the biscuit, but just not enough filling in the middle, which throws off the texture. However, the filling itself is nice and sugary, but there just needs to be a lot more.
For 85p, it's certainly not a bad bourbon biscuit. In fact, I can imagine it going quite well with a cup of tea. However, it was just beaten out by others on the list. Despite this, Lidl has ranked highly in my previous taste tests, and it actually has my favourite own-label garlic bread.
- Biscuit: 4/5
- Filling: 2/5
- Texture: 2/5
- Flavour: 6/10
- Final score: 14/25

6. Aldi Belmont Bourbon Creams
Price: 43p (200g)
The flavour isn’t super rich, but it is pleasant nonetheless. There is a good helping of cream filling, so it gives the desired texture. There is a nice balance between the flavour of the cream and the flavour of the biscuit, but others just had more of a richer punch.
However, it is one of the cheapest packs of biscuits on the list, which counts for something. It's a solid budget-friendly option from the UK's cheapest supermarket.
- Bisuit: 3/5
- Filling: 3.5/5
- Texture: 4/5
- Flavour: 6/10
- Final score: 16.5/25

5. Waitrose Essential Bourbon Creams Biscuits
Price: £1.15 (400g)
I was hoping for something slightly richer when it came to Waitrose’s entry, but I wasn’t blown away. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad biscuit, but others in my taste test just had richer fillings and better-tasting biscuits. It’s a solid entry, but it just doesn’t punch above some others.
It actually got the same final score as the next entry on the list. However, at £1.15 per pack, it is on the pricier side, which is why the other one gets the higher spot on the list.
- Biscuit: 3/5
- Filling: 3/5
- Texture: 4/5
- Flavour: 7/10
- Final score: 17/25

4. Sainsbury's Bourbon Creams
Price: 50p (200g)
Sainsbury's does a solid bourbon cream biscuit. The favour could have been stronger, but there is a nice sweetness to it.
It didn’t have as much of a chocolatey flavour as some of the others, but it was definitely present. The biscuit is on the crunchier side, but it needs just a bit more filling to complement that. At 50p, it's something I'm pretty happy with, overall.
- Biscuit: 4.5/5
- Filling: 3/5
- Texture: 3/5
- Flavour: 6.5/10
- Final score: 17/25

3. Tesco Bourbon Creams Biscuits
Price: 64p (296g)
There was that signature bourbon flavour that we all love, and it hits you as soon as you bite into the biscuit. It would have been nice to have just slightly more filling, but the cream itself has that lovely sweet flavour, complemented by a biscuit that is pretty rich in taste.
- Biscuit: 4/5
- Filling: 3/5
- Texture: 3/5
- Flavour: 8/10
- Final score: 18/25

2. M&S Extra Cream bourbon Creams
Price: 55p (165g)
The name makes these appealing straight away, and these biscuits certainly live up to the promise. The double-stuffing really helps here, as the flavour of the cream really comes out to play.
Speaking of, the cream has quite a rich flavour and doesn’t just taste sugary, while the biscuit is crunchy enough without being too hard, with a slight softness that makes the experience rather luscious.
- Biscuit: 4/5
- Filling: 5/5
- Texture: 4/5
- Flavour: 9/10
- Final score: 22/25

1. ASDA Bourbon Biscuits
Price: 64p (300g)
At 64p for 300 grams (around 21p per 100g), this is one of the cheapest packs of bourbon biscuits on the list, and it was by far the most delicious. Asda’s entry wasn’t the most appealing to the eye, with the cream filling not looking too generous.
- However, this was the best surprise of the bunch. Asda’s bourbon biscuit cream filling was probably the richest in flavour, perfectly complemented by a biscuit that had a perfect crunch and quite a nice aftertaste.
- Biscuit: 4/5
- Filling: 5/5
- Texture: 5/5
- Flavour: 9/10
- Final score: 23/25
