New Volvo XC40 2018 - Electric version of the compact SUV confirmed
VOLVO XC40 2018 range could be extended to accommodate an all-electric powertrain, confirms the Swedish carmaker.
New Volvo XC40 confirmed for future production
Volvo has confirmed that there will be an all-electric version of the XC40 SUV launching.
The first all-electric Volvo model will be the Polestar 2 which is coming in 2019.
Volvo recently split with Polestar to focus on performance and electric cars
Polestar 2 will cost around $50,000 and confirmed that it will not be a ‘tesla killer’ but merely competition to the brand.
Deliveries are not expected until early-2020 and production specs have yet to be divulged.
Volvo is, however, lining up to launch its own electric car under the core brand.
It is seemingly going to be a version of the new XC40 that goes on sale this year.
At the launch of the new three-cylinder petrol powertrain the company revealed its ambition to build an EV model.
In a press release it said: “Furthermore, the new three-cylinder powertrain has been deliberately designed for integration into Twin Engine plug-in hybrid cars.
The new compact SUV will go on sale this year
“A hybridised as well as a pure electric powertrain option for the XC40 will be added later.”
There is, however, no confirmed timeline for the EV model.
It is likely that the electric variant will cost significantly more than the combustion-powered variants.
Previously the car manufacturer said that it will introduce elector motors, in some description, to all of its new vehicles by 2019.
