Electric car giant Tesla interested in Google's innovative self driving technology
SELF driving cars could be on the streets in a few years time after the CEO of electric car giant Tesla said they were interested in Google's 'autopilot' technology.
Entrepreneur Elon Musk said cars that can take control from the driver are a natural progression in the evolution of the automative industry.
The co-founder of the firm said he has been in talks with Google over the self-driving technology they have been developing for the past few years.
Mr Musk said: "I like the word autopilot more than I like the word self- driving.
"Self-driving sounds like it’s going to do something you don’t want it to do.
"Autopilot is a good thing to have in planes, and we should have it in cars."
In an interview with Bloomberg, Mr Musk said Google should fine tune the technology to implement an optical system which cameras and software.
He said this would be cheaper than their current system which uses sensors.
Anthony Levandowski, the product manager for the Google project, said the technology is expected to be released within five years.
Mr Musk revealed on Twitter that creating an autopilot for cars is 'important' at Tesla but it a still a few years away from production.
