One of the world’s longest roads is a whopping 9,000 miles long without crossing a single border in a massive engineering feat

Australia's Highway 1 is one of the most popular routes Down Under, connecting almost all of the country's major destinations.

The road visits seven of Australia’s eight top cities - including tourist hotspots such as Sydney and Melbourne.

It is understood that over a million people use some part of the highway network every day.

The important road ticks off Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Broome, Perth, Esperance, Adelaide and Melbourne.

Meanwhile, the road also hops across the Bass Strait and connects the country to Hobart, Tasmania.

At a staggering 9,009 miles or 14,500km, the route surpasses the Trans-Siberian Highway and Trans-Canada Highway by several thousand miles.

However, the road only secures second spot, with the famous Pan-American Highway more than triple in size.

The road, which connects Alaska to the tip of Argentina, runs for a staggering 30,000 miles or 48,000km.

The importance and scale of the route have encouraged petrolheads to attempt a world record attempt at being the fastest to complete the 9,000-mile route.

Back in 2017, Highway One to Hell broke the record with a time of five days, 13 hours, and 43 minutes.

Jay Gordon, the man behind the world record attempt, undertook the challenge behind the wheel of a Toyota LandCruiser.

He told CarAdvice: "I'm obsessed with these kinds of records and I thought I could beat it, but the more you talk about it, the more you realise there is only one way to prove it."

According to the team, the car ran perfectly for the entire trip with the only gremlin being an intermittent oil pressure light.

Jay added: "Apart from the 10 times to be refueled, we only turned it off once in Darwin for a bathroom break and live stream. All other stops were roadside and brief to change drivers or empty our bladder."

In comparison, the UK’s longest road is the A1, which runs for 410 miles between London and Edinburgh.

It means motorists would have to complete the entire length of the road in an eye-watering time to finish the entire course.
