Motorists desperate for something a little more stable should look no further than these three top picks with models from Ford, Honda and Fiat making our selection.

Usually, when it comes to handling, prospective buyers will look to rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive models first.

These machines tend to have superior grip and balance often making these models an ideal choice.

However, front wheel drive (FWD) models tend to perform better in harsher weather conditions with superior traction on wet and snowy roads.

With winter fast approaching, FWD may be the way to go with some iconic brands among the top picks.

Ford Focus RS500

AutoExpress has previously praised the handling of the RS500 with the car's grip one of the model's standout features. Reviewers stressed the model has “remarkably little torque steer on smooth roads” with a strong front differential.

This ensures the vehicle can “find more grip than you ever thought possible in a front-wheel drive hatch”. The chassis is almost identical to Ford’s previous RS model but is equipped with an extra 45bhp.

Just 500 models were produced making this a relatively rare collector's item with just over 100 examples sold in the UK.

Honda Civic Type R

While building the Type R, engineers wanted to create a race car for the road and they achieved just that.

The Type R went on to achieve notable success in the British Touring Car Championship in the 2010s and the racer approach lends itself to a superb handling model today.

Features like a rear diffuser and front splitter help with stability and handling. Meanwhile, dual-axis front suspension helps control the power and keep models in a straight line.

AutoCar has previously claimed owners will enjoy “sublime handling and reliability”.

Fiat Abarth 695 Biposto

Fiat still claims the 695 Biposto is “the fastest Abarth ever” produced by the Italian brand. The sporty design isn’t just for appearances with the model packing a punch underneath the hood.

With a top speed of 142mph, the model is even capable of reaching 0-62mph in just 5.9 seconds. Reviewers have praised the car's handling model with the steering described as accurate, nimble and fun.

The car is sensitive to throttle inputs making car control a breeze while an adjustable hydraulic suspension helps boost agility.
