Kosovo is a country in southeastern Europe which is bordered by Serbia, Montenegro, Albania and North Macedonia.
Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in February 2008 after a brutal war. Its independence has been recognised by most western governments - including the UK, USA and most EU countries.
However, it is not recognised by Russia, Serbia and notably Spain - the latter because the Spanish government does not want to give encouragement to Basque and Catalonian breakaway movements.
