Emphysema

Entity Logo

Emphysema is a lung condition where the air sacs (alveoli) are damaged. This leads to a smaller surface area in your lungs, meaning less oxygen can reach your bloodstream at any one time.

Emphysema symptoms include an increased amount of breathelessness, weakened defences to chest infections, phlegmy coughs, fatigue, and a barrel-shaped chest.

Causes of emphysema include cigarette smoking or long-term exposure to particular industrial pollutants or dusts.
