Wine can help beat dementia
A SMALL glass of wine a day could help protect older women against dementia.
Doctors at Glasgow University studied more than 5,800 people aged between 70 and 82 in a range of memory and language tests.[>

Although results for men were similar whether they drank or not, women who consumed between one and seven units of alcohol a week performed significantly better than those who rarely drank.[>
[>
Government guidelines recommend women drink no more than two to three units a day and men no more than three to four.[>

Scientists believe alcohol may stimulate the release of oestrogen in women, a hormone thought to protect the brain.[>

Professor David Stott said: “Modest amounts of alcohol in women seem to be associated with a delay in cognitive decline, such as speed of thought and how you use language and words.”[>

He added: “This is not an endorsement to drink to excess. Large amounts of alcohol will damage your brain but the occasional tipple may do you some good.”[>
