Almost half of pensioners use Facebook
PENSIONERS are becoming increasingly internet savvy, with almost half using Facebook and over three quarters using the web to shop for bargain deals.
The social networking site is used by 41 per cent of those over 65, while 84 per cent of elderly people shop online, according to new research.
Three quarters say the use the internet to keep them feeling young and mentally agile, while 65 per cent say they can't live without the internet.
Jamie Ford, CEO Plusnet who commissioned the study, said: "It is really encouraging to see that so many over 65s are getting online and really making the most out of the internet.
"There is no reason for anyone to feel their age means they can’t get the best out of what technology has to offer."
One of the country's most famous elderly internet users is Sir Bruce Forsyth, who recently said he shops online for the best deals.
The 85-year-old veteran broadcaster said having an iPad makes him feel young and that he 'loves' the internet.
While elderly people have become increasingly web savy figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggests there is a long way to go.
ONS research shows there are 5.2 million people in the UK over the age of 65 who have never used the internet.
