Police pension row continues
REFORM of police retirement rules was demanded last night as it emerged that 1,813 officers in a decade have kept their pensions by resigning while facing disciplinary action.
Police officers should not be treated any differently from any other public sector employees.
The largest number, 635, came from the Metropolitan Police and 104 Greater Manchester Police officers also took advantage of the loophole.
Last night Labour MP Keith Vaz, chairman of the Commons home affairs committee, called for an urgent shake-up saying: “Police officers should not be treated any differently from any other public sector employees.”
But a spokeswoman for the Association of Chief Police officers said: “Policing is a high profile public service where leaders deal with serious issues that can attract complaint. An investigation into professional conduct does not infer automatic guilt.”
