Great balls of fire, they’re back
NOSTALGIC adults still have an appetite for childhood penny sweets, according to a supermarket chain which is bringing them back.
Aniseed balls topped a poll of retro sweets which shoppers wanted to see reinstated in stores.
The fiery boiled sweets are making a comeback at Waitrose along with sherbet pips and chocolate mice.
But the old-fashioned aniseed balls will be given a modern twist to suit the taste of today's shoppers who want their sweets made without artificial colourings.
It means the sugary balls will lose their traditional red hue and instead be plain white.
Waitrose confectionery buyer Matthew Jones said: "The colour of our aniseed balls will certainly raise a few eyebrows with candy connoisseurs.Ó
Around 2,200 shoppers took part in the store's sweets revival campaign. Bonbons and liquorice torpedoes also made the top 10.
