MOT test: Tips to make sure your car passes

Millions of motorists are being urged to stay vigilant or risk fines. Brits have been told to check when their MOT runs out amid a fresh warning from the DVLA that drivers could avoid a last-minute scramble by signing up for its online account service.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency has launched an appeal for motorists to add their vehicles to a digital driver and vehicles account, allowing them to quickly see key information including when their MOT certificate expires. The reminder comes as many drivers continue to rely on paper reminders or simply forget their MOT renewal date altogether – risking a failed test booking scramble, fines and invalidating their vehicle's roadworthiness.

A vehicle must normally have a valid MOT certificate once it reaches its third anniversary. Driving without a valid MOT can lead to a fine and could create problems with insurance claims if a vehicle is found to be unroadworthy.

In a message posted on social media, the DVLA said: 'Don't forget to add your vehicles to your Driver and vehicles account. You can then view your vehicle details, including when your MOT expires.'

The online account allows motorists to access a range of services, including checking driving records, viewing penalty points, managing vehicle tax reminders and renewing a driving licence.

However, one of the most useful features for motorists is the ability to see when an MOT is due, helping drivers avoid missing a crucial deadline.

The Government also provides a separate online MOT checking service that allows motorists to check whether a vehicle has a valid MOT certificate and when it expires using only the registration number.

Drivers can also view a vehicle's MOT history, including previous pass and fail results, mileage readings recorded during tests and details of any defects identified by testers.

For used car buyers, the MOT history service can provide a valuable insight into a vehicle's condition and whether recurring faults have emerged over time. The DVLA said motorists can choose digital reminders instead of paper notifications when managing their vehicle details online.

Experts regularly advise drivers not to leave MOT bookings until the last minute, particularly during busy periods when testing centres can have limited availability.

Motorists whose vehicles are approaching the third anniversary of their registration should be especially vigilant, as this is the point at which a car requires its first MOT test.

Failing to spot an approaching expiry date could leave drivers facing a race against time to secure a test appointment and keep their vehicle legally on the road.

The DVLA's message serves as a timely reminder for drivers to check their MOT status now rather than waiting until a renewal deadline is looming. More details can be found here.
