A worker has contacted HMRC for urgent help as she is being overtaxed and is on the wrong tax code.

The woman reached out to the tax authority for help over X as she was unable to call up over the phone.

She asked: "How do i change my tax code? It's the code as if I have two jobs, I don't I have my P45 and I've just been way overtaxed.

"I need the money back ASAP but i work 7.30am to 6.30pm every day so I cannot ring. Please advise on what to do to get this sorted ASAP."

A representative asked her if she had a personal tax account and what tax code was showing on her account.

She said her tax code showing on her account was BR, which stands for basic rate.

When this tax code shows, it means all your income from a job is taxed at the basic rate of income tax at 20 percent, without any personal allowance to exempt part of your income from tax.

The HMRC representative then asked if her employment details on her account were correct.

When she said they were, the customer support team said: "You can update the estimated earnings which should generate a new code to be sent."

But the worker said she had already tried this, saying: "I did this, and they’ve changed my tax code but still think i have two jobs.

"I have one job...it says on there 'employment ended since 5 April 2024' but still given me a tax code of 234LX, and my current jobs new tax code is 1022TX.

"How do I change this so I only have one job?"

HMRC then directed her to this enquiries page for income tax, stating: " I'd advise to contact the team directly in this case."

The woman replied: "I work 7.30am to 6.30pm, so it’s impossible to call. What time is the live chat open?

"Is there nothing else I can do to help with this that doesn’t involve calling? I need this tax money back."

The tax body replied to explain: "The webchat for PAYE runs the same hours as the phone line."
