Seafood giant Young’s is to put chicken on its menu for the first time in a break with its 200-year-old fish tradition.
The move into meat comes with the launch of its new Chip Shop Special Orders range, which features steaks, bites and strips for wrap fillings.
Young’s will remain fish experts, but we are also renowned for our batter and for this range we have partnered with chicken specialists in the EU
The chicken breasts are coated in the same bubbly batter recipe that has helped the company sell two billion of its Chip Shop fish fillets since the mid-1980s.
The popularity of the white meat in the UK, as well as Young’s own recent research, which showed some 42 per cent of chippies were now serving chicken, prompted the decision.

“When we asked our customers, chicken received an overwhelming thumbs up,” says Yvonne Adam, marketing director for Young’s Seafood based in Grimsby.
Priced from £2, the chicken is available from Tesco
The chicken is sourced from welfare approved farms across Europe and the products, priced from £2 and are available from Tesco.
“Young’s will remain fish experts, but we are also renowned for our batter and for this range we have partnered with chicken specialists in the EU,” added Adam.

According to its latest accounts filed at Companies House, Young’s made a pre-tax profit of £16.3million for the year to September 30, compared to £19.6million the previous year.
Turnover was down 1.3 per cent to £587.9million.
