West won hip hop golden boy status through his canny way with a beat and association with Jay-Z, though Kanye’s rapping and vocal charisma are his achilles heel. Alas, 808s is pretty flat by his standards, despite help from scene heavyweights Mr Hudson and Lil Wayne. Sugarhill Gang moment Paranoid and Street Lights just rescue it.
