CD Review: Julia Holter - Loud City Song
APPARENTLY inspired by Colette's 1944 novella Gigi, in which a young Parisienne girl is groomed as a courtesan, Julia Holter's third album in as many years is a work of restless beauty and imagination.
The Los Angeles-based artist has a voice of astonishing beauty, sometimes soaring, sometimes just a sweet whisper, and it is set against arrangements that combine classical austerity with a showiness bordering on musical theatre.
The opening World, galloping Kate Bush-like Horns Surrounding Me and sumptious Hello Stranger are the highlights of an outstanding album.
Essential.
VERDICT: 5/5
