Captain Underpants review: A warm-hearted celebration of schoolboy friendship
YOU do not expect much from a film called Captain Underpants but this high-spirited animated feature is surprisingly witty and inventive and beneath its toilet humour and underwear jokes it offers a warm-hearted celebration of schoolboy friendship.
Captain Underpants is a very pleasant surprise
Captain Underpants (Cert U; 89mins)
George (voiced by Kevin Hart) and Harold (Thomas Middleditch) have been best buddies since the day they both sniggered at a teacher’s mention of the planet Uranus.
Now they hang out in a tree house and make their own hand-drawn comic books.
Their greatest creation is Captain Underpants, a bald superhero who looks like a boiled egg sporting a pair of Y-fronts.
A magic ring allows the boys to hypnotise their nasty school principal Mr Krupp (Ed Helms) and make him believe that he is Captain Underpants.
It is the start of a manic adventure as they try to thwart Professor Poopypants (Nick Kroll) and his plan to eradicate laughter from the world.
Young kids will have a giggle and even grown-ups might crack a smile. A very pleasant surprise.
