The 61-year-old star has turned to directing in recent years with films like The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto.
Now he’s all the award season buzz with his latest movie, Hacksaw Ridge, which received an incredible 10 minute standing ovation at its world premiere.
The film follows the true life story of Private Desmond Doss, an American WW2 solider who refused to go into battle with a gun, but ended up saving dozens of men’s lives.
In an exclusive first look, fans can take a behind-the-scenes look at the movie, with the lead, Andrew Garfield, and Gibson himself.
In the short, the two stars describe what it is that drove Private Doss to take his stand as a pacifist, but still go to war.
The British actor said: “Desmond was in tune with his idea of oneness, that we are all one, that we are all brothers and sisters.
“He didn’t just live that through words and through ideas, he lived it through actions and you can see it in the film.”
