An action thriller viewers say will “mess with your head” has found a new fanbase on Netflix.

The film is quickly climbing Netflix’s most-watched chart and fans are already comparing it to Mission Impossible, praising its “superb” cast and “thrilling” twists.

Directed by D.J. Caruso, the movie stars plenty of high-profile actors, with Shia LaBeouf leading the cast alongside The White Lotus star Michelle Monaghan.

Other cast members include Rosario Dawson, Anthony Mackie and Billy Bob Thornton. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a dismal critic score of just 27%, but the audience rating is much higher at 62%.

Since its release, some fans have argued this hidden gem was actually ahead of its time thanks to its AI themes. Eagle Eye, which first came out in 2008, is now capturing the imaginations of audiences nearly two decades later.

The synopsis on Rotten Tomatoes reads: “Jerry Shaw (Shia LaBeouf) and Rachel Holloman (Michelle Monaghan) are two strangers whose lives are suddenly thrown into turmoil by a mysterious woman they have never met.

“Threatening their lives and family, the unseen caller uses everyday technology to control their actions and push them into increasing danger. As events escalate, Jerry and Rachel become the country's most-wanted fugitives and must figure out what is happening to them.”

Despite the fact that the film was slated by critics, fans have since jumped to its defence, leaving many positive reviews.

Taking to the comments section, one viewer mused: “This movie is worth watching. Especially considering where AI is headed. Solid acting all around as well.”

Another agreed: “Amazing movie and concept. Ahead of its time. Something that has the possibility of coming true. Shia LaBeouf's acting was amazing. The direction was amazing.”

Other people praised the plot, with one promising the film “will definitely mess with your head and it's high-tech”, while another added: “This is a suspenseful thrilling movie. I was on the edge of my seat. Very clever and thought provoking.”

One more person wrote: “This movie is nonstop action from start to finish!!! It is intense through each and every scene and the acting is superb!! If you are a fan of action movies, this one is for you.”

However, not everyone was a fan, as one viewer critiqued: “A movie that tried to be serious and yet nearly failed on everything it set out to accomplish.”

Another agreed: “A political thriller that's derivative and thinly plotted, with flawed acting and generic action.”

Nevertheless, other fans called the movie “epic” and even “Mission impossible on Steroids”, while another more insisted: “This was a great movie. I don’t understand all the naysayers.”

Eagle Eye is available to stream now on Netflix.
