WINNIE-THE-POOH by AA Milne, Egmont, £7.99
One I had read to me over and over. The stories are beautifully written and illustrated.
When my mum asked to see my books when I was 11, this was one and she handed it back to me. I've still got it.
The Drama of Being a Child
THE DRAMA OF BEING A CHILD by Alice Miller, Virago, £9.99
This profoundly changed my attitude to parenting. It says that a child needs to be listened to, however unlikely it is that they're telling the truth.
It has made me more patient and tactful which I appreciate.
OUR FATHER by Bernice Rubens, out of print
This is an uplifting short novel about a 37-year-old virgin who explores deserts.
It brings in God and the devil, the difference between right and wrong and it throws up a lot of issues. There's also a twist.
Rubens is very accessible and it almost feels as if you're having tea with her.
The Road Less Travelled
THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED by M Scott Peck, Arrow, £7.99
I read this in my mid-30s when I was reading every self-help book I could and it changed my outlook on life.
I went to California for work once and a strange city can be incredibly lonely. But this piece of writing encourages you to take full responsibility for your life. As a result I had all kinds of adventures.
LEVELS OF LIFE by Julian Barnes, Vintage, £7.99
This is a naked portrayal of his grief at losing his wife. I had to wade through the first third about the history of ballooning but then he connects that with his own personal experiences.
It's Shakespearean in its poetry and profundity.
Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood
DIVINE SECRETS OF THE YA-YA SISTERHOOD by Rebecca Wells, out of print
When my children finished their exams and I left EastEnders it was the end of an era so we went to Barbados on holiday.
The boys went off and I read this book on the beach. It's about a daughter who learns about her mother after finding a scrapbook of her mother's childhood. I got lost in it.
