Gibraltar's liberty will not be preserved by lawyers
PLACING our faith in the European Court has seldom proved a happy course of action for Britain.
If there is a way for it to find against us then it usually does.
So news that our Government is considering taking legal action in Brussels against Spain for interfering with free movement at its border with Gibraltar will hardly cause shockwaves in Madrid.
The Spanish government is clearly adopting an aggressive stance towards Gibraltar for the sake of inflaming public opinion, thereby deflecting attention from the hopeless state of its domestic economy.
People should remember that Spain was a fascist dictatorship within living memory and understand that it cannot always be relied upon to deal with other countries in a civilised fashion.
Ultimately the right of the people of Gibraltar to remain British and to go about their business unhindered will not be guaranteed by the European legal system but by a strong military and in particular a strong Royal Navy.
Were David Cameron to resolve to spend more on defence and less on lawyers he would be doing a service to Britons all over the world.
