Not an outstanding idea
FYING was once considered the epitome of glamour with such terms as “the jet set” underlining the thrill offered by civil aviation in its early days.
That was before the onset of frequent strikes by baggage handlers and flight crews, overweening security, long queues at overcrowded airports, computerised check-ins and other miseries that afflict the modern flyer. now Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary has suggested another tilt downmarket in the interests of reducing costs: standing sections on flights. nobody can dispute that Mr O’Leary has been in the forefront of innovation in his industry and there is very definitely a
market for his no-frills formula.
But even on short-haul somewhere to sit is surely not too much to ask. That some passengers will no longer have to
be told to revert their seats to the upright position before landing is scant compensation for such a loss of comfort.
