Don't be such a silly sausage
AMAZING isn't it that chorizo and prosecco are now considered staples.
Ten years ago many of us had never even heard of them. Don't you think, were our grandparents to take a short break here from their clouds and harps in Paradise, they'd be less shocked by the technological innovations than by the food? Imagine trying to explain our reliance on hummus, the fact that we pay good money to eat small slices of raw fish wrapped around cold rice, or our obsession with so-called "sun-dried" tomatoes.
We don't boil mince any more. We frown upon the common or garden sliced white loaf. We fling words like "polenta" into the conversation with wanton abandon.
All of which puts me in the mood for a grilled lamb chop with mashed potato and cabbage. All these new-fangled comestibles lose their allure if we don't get back to our roots with a decent casserole occasionally.
