Downton Abbey: Costume drama delight
DOWNTON Abbey, a fabulous new TV costume drama set in the Edwardian era, is perfection for Sunday night viewing.
It has everything you could wish for: actors with the quality of Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville and Jim Carter; stunning houses, gorgeous costumes and a romantic but hard-headed storyline.
Why is it that we Brits are so hooked on costume drama? Why is it so reassuring, especially when we watch it in the comfort of our own far from stately homes, snuggled up on the sofa.

I guess it’s because we think wealthy people in those days, living in such beautiful surroundings with a fleet of servants attending to their every whim, can’t possibly have a real worry in their heads. Yes, the heir to the fortune may have just drowned on the Titanic; yes the Earl and his family face ruin unless they can find a distant relative to marry the eldest daughter but heck, it’s not real is it?
We have it so much worse. Then we drift off to bed, a little comforted before we face Monday.
