No need for immigration 'consensus'
LABOUR’S Keith Vaz wishes to see a “consensus” established on immigration policy between his party, the Tories and the Lib Dems. I’ll bet he does.
Home Affairs Select Committee chairman Vaz says he wishes to avoid “an arms race among our party leaders on immigration policy”.
I think he means that he does not want them to compete to satisfy the majority view of the British public that much tougher controls should be put in place.
Yet the reason the leaders are finally being forced to toughen up their immigration policies is the success of Ukip at the Eastleigh by-election.
It is the rise to prominence of a party prepared to break the consensus that is forcing beneficial change.
My advice to voters is to avoid Mr Vaz’s attempt to build a new consensus like the plague.
