Labour housing bill disaster resurrected
THIS week’s row over housing benefit cuts (aka “the bedroom tax”) ignites memories of Tony Blair’s first speech to Parliament as prime minister in May 1997.
In it he committed his party to radical welfare reform and complained: “Today we spend more than £11billion on housing benefit.”
The housing benefit bill that Labour passed on to the coalition in 2010? More than £21billion and rising fast.
Thanks for nothing Tony.
